The ancient Greeks seemed to suspect it:

When they first came across amber from the northern regions of Europe in ancient times, they gave it the name “ḗlektron”, translated: light gold.
Even in German usage, amber is still referred to as “gold of the sea” to this day.
Both terms refer to the characteristic appearance of the stone - its shimmer and golden-brown color.
